Natural Art of the Salish Sea

The surface of water has magical qualities…it is truly ‘fluid’, undulating and shifting, and reflects any light that reaches it, either directly from the sun, or from man-made objects, people…anything nearby. Waves, wind, birds, boat wakes… they all continuously affect how the water lies, moves, changes, and most importantly, reflects light. Also, what is seen and reflected is completely dependent on the viewer’s position… shift a few inches over, and it can look significantly different.

These photos are an exploration into capturing the awe and wonder of water and light. All photos are taken in or around Bellingham, Washington and capture the spirit of the Salish Sea. Some have been modestly adjusted to reduce haze, or increase contrast slightly, or cropped to zero in on key details. But nothing has been added or removed from the photos… the contents, structure, etc. are as they naturally occur.

Kevin Wittkopf came to Washington state from Canada in 2003 to work for Microsoft, moving to Bellingham until retiring in 2021. He (re)started photography in 2023, focusing on ‘happenstantial’ art that occurs in the natural world… “seeing the unseen” amazing details in water reflections, wood textures/bark, mushrooms/fungi, etc. He is most interested in sharing and inspiring others to experience the amazing art that is all around us in the natural world.
